Experiential Learning
Experiential Learning Information
- Download the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will need to be signed by your proposed employer. This document outlines the responsibilities of the employer. Download the MOU here.
- Login to Symplicity, select the Experiential Learning option on the left-hand menu.
- Add New Experience. For detailed instructions, click here.
- When completing the application, it’s essential that you select the appropriate internship type based on your major and, if applicable, international student status.
- Upload the completed MOU as an attachment to your Experiential Learning Application. International students will also need to attach a CPT Authorization Request Form (contact Sarah Stevens in UNA’s Office of International Affairs if you have questions).
- Once you complete the above steps and submit your documentation in Symplicity, the system will initiate a workflow process for approval. The initial review / approval will be completed by the faculty chair in your department.
Experiential Learning Types
After you’ve identified careers of interest, obtain relevant experience. Experiential learning is a process through which students develop knowledge, skills, and values from direct experiences outside a traditional academic setting. It is gained through work-related activities that help explore and clarify career interests and foster personal and professional growth while developing professional contacts.- Become self-managed learners
- Learn problem solving skills and improve communication skills
- Are better prepared and viewed as better candidates for employment
- Receive more job offers and can be selective
- Earn higher salaries
The Career Center posts all known internship opportunities on Symplicity. Students are responsible for securing their own internships, as the Career Center does not place interns. Once hired, students work with their college and then the Career Center to determine if academic credit will be approved and to complete the process.
Students perform short-term, professional assignments while also allowing companies to identify and assess highly motivated college students and recent graduates for fit should there be full-time opportunities. Unlike traditional internships, these paid opportunities typically range from 5 to 40 hours of work, can be completed year-round, and help students develop career skills while getting paid.
